Tension type headache is the most common type of headache experienced by adults. Up to 78% of adults will experience a tension headache at some point in their lifetime. Symptoms of tension headache can vary but typical symptoms include mild to moderate pain in the back of the head and/or temples, sometimes radiating to the front of the head in a band like pattern.  The discomfort typically occurs on both sides of the head simultaneously.  Tension headaches can last as little as 30 minutes or as long as several days.  It is unique from migraine in that it typically does not have both associated nausea and vomiting or light or sound sensitivity.  Tension headache can be episodic and occur rarely or it can be a chronic headache that occurs every day.  The cause for tension headache is generally multi-factorial.  Sleep deprivation, poor posture, stress, anxiety, fatigue, strenuous physical activity all have been reported to contribute the onset of tension headache.
