Menstrual migraine occurs in pre-menopausal women who experience the characteristics of migraine type headaches however menstrual migraines occur around the time of menses or ovulation and are triggered by a drop in estrogen.  Headaches may occur with every menstrual cycle or may be variable. Menstrual migraine can be debilitating and at times more difficult to treat compared to migraines occurring at other times of the month.  The treatment for menstrual migraine can be similar to treatment used for typical migraines.  Depending upon your risk factors your doctor may recommend hormonal treatment options to aid in managing your menstrual migraines.
